What Is Agentic SEO? Optimizing Your Business for ChatGPT and Gemini Search
July 22, 2026 · 8 min read
A growing share of people no longer start their search for a product, service, or recommendation by typing into Google. Instead, they ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or another AI assistant directly — "what’s a good CRM development company," "best web developer near me," "recommend an email marketing agency for a small business." If your business isn’t structured in a way these tools can find and trust, you simply don’t exist in that conversation.
Traditional SEO and Agentic SEO solve different problems
Traditional SEO is built around ranking in a list of links on a search engine results page. Agentic SEO is built around something different: being the specific answer, recommendation, or citation an AI assistant gives when someone asks a relevant question in natural language. The audience isn’t a person scanning ten blue links anymore — it’s a language model summarizing the internet on someone’s behalf.
This doesn’t replace traditional SEO. It sits alongside it, because the two overlap significantly — a technically healthy, well-structured website tends to perform better on both fronts. But there are specific things that matter more for AI visibility than they ever did for classic search rankings.
Why structured, clear content matters more than ever
AI models are far better at extracting and citing information that is written clearly, organized with proper headings, and directly answers a specific question. Vague, marketing-heavy copy that never states clearly what a business actually does, who it serves, or what makes it different is much harder for a model to summarize accurately — so it often gets skipped in favor of a competitor who states things plainly.
Structured data and schema markup help AI understand your business
Schema markup — the structured data added to a webpage’s code — was originally built to help Google understand pages better. It turns out AI models benefit from the same structure. Clearly marked FAQs, service descriptions, pricing information, and business details in schema format give AI assistants a much easier, more reliable way to extract accurate facts about your business rather than guessing from unstructured paragraphs.
Your presence beyond your own website matters too
AI assistants often draw on a wider set of sources than just your website — business directories, review platforms, and in some cases knowledge bases like Wikidata. A business with accurate, consistent information across these sources is more likely to be described correctly than one that only exists on its own homepage. Part of agentic SEO work involves checking and correcting how a business is represented across this wider footprint.
What businesses can realistically do today
Start by testing it yourself — ask ChatGPT or Gemini a question a potential customer might ask about your industry, and see whether your business comes up, and if it does, whether the description is accurate. From there, focus on making your website’s service pages, FAQs, and pricing information as clear and well-structured as possible, add proper schema markup, and make sure your business information is consistent everywhere it appears online.
This is still an early, fast-moving area, and no agency can honestly promise a guaranteed mention from any specific AI model — these systems change constantly and don’t work like a paid placement. What a business can control is making sure its own content gives these models every reason to find, understand, and represent it accurately when the moment comes.
